I'm trying to do some characters who are riffs on Hansel and Gretel without having it be too obvious right off the bat to an English reader.

To that end, I was thinking about using the Serbo-Croatian names for the characters, Ivica and Marica. However I understand from Googling that Marica is a Spanish slur, so perhaps that's not a good name to use.

Wikipedia says that Ivica is pronounced [ɪʋɪtsa]. How are the syllables broken up? Where is the stress?

Are there any other good possibilities for a Gretel-related name that is not obvious? It's in the same family as English "Margaret" which means "pearl." Maybe I'll just go with "Margaret" or "Pearl".

What are the folk tale Hansel and Gretel called in a language you speak?
16th-Jul-2009 10:57 pm - Poly on the news - SE Wisconsin
Channel 4/WTMJ is doing something on poly/open marriages tomorrow night on their 10 pm news. I have no idea what kind of spin it will have, since they just did a bit of a teaser for it tonight. "This is is wife. This is his girlfriend. And it's all out in the open. How some Wisconsin couples are changing the face of marriage." That kind of thing. Anyhoo, thought some of the local folks might be interested in catching it.
16th-Jul-2009 08:55 pm - The way my mind works.......
So [info]seattlejo and I saw flyers and signs for a "community dinner". We checked. It's hosted by Assemblies of God.

My first comment was "I thought He came pre-assembled. Does one need an allen wrench?"

Is God a flat-pack?
I've been instructed to install our company's product, Velocity, at the customer's site. As the customer doesn't have network connectivity, I decided to create a virtual machine under Xen (which we're using because Oracle recommends it), install the software on that, get it configured and tested, then move the VM to the customer's site.

So far, so good.

It turns out there are two ways to create VMs. One is to install the OS from an ISO image, the other is to use a “VM template”. And the only way to gain hardware virtualization is to use a template. The templates come with already-built virtual disks. These virtual disks are small (4GB), and more space is intended to be added with additional virtual devices.

This is awkward, as it involves coordinating various hunks of virtual disk and keeping them together and in synch, as well as ferreting out all the necessary mount points so nothing overflows the small root filesystem.

Fortunately, I can use resize2fs to “grow” a filesystem while keeping its contents. Unfortunately, the virtual drive doesn't have room to do so. Fortunately, I can make it bigger by just tacking more space on the end (dd with the "seek" option can't really do it, so I have to make a sparse file with dd then concatenate that onto the virtual disk file).

The virtual disk, however, is partitioned. And the partition labels don't describe the additional space. So I attack it with fdisk and then parted. I figure I can just move the swap partition (whose contents are ephemeral and don't matter) to the (new) end, and then expand the root partition. Unfortunately, parted refuses to do this, as it performs the resize operation automatically with the partition expansion, and it complains that the filesystem contains options that are beyond its ability to resize (because Oracle runs SElinux).

so then it degenerates into yak shaving... )

Fortunately (and perhaps frighteningly), I have experience writing disk formatters and partitioners.

EDIT: I wrote 'em, but can't do real testing with the 32-bit OEL here at home, so real testing will have to wait until tomorrow.

Okay, so this is one of those really, really weird questions.

I have an 11-yr-old girl and her mother visiting in London, in the early 90's. Daughter is a bit of a bibliophile, and tends to buy at least one book wherever she goes with her pocket money. Sometimes more. With this in mind, mother packs something in her own bag for the daughter's overflow. I'm imagining this to be like the cloth grocery bags I always used in Germany--made out of a strong, light material that's probably some cotton blend. They're cheap and small--you can fit two, maybe three 3-litre bottles in them.

How common would these be in London? Would they be present at all?

Second question. Having never been to London myself, let alone Charing Cross Road, I must ask:
Can anyone give me the names of a bookstore and a recordshop that are side-by-side? If not, no sweat. If so...free kidney!!

Thank you very much!

I was on hold with Northwest Airlines of all places listening to what sounded like alternative or contemporary folk on their line when on came a song whose refrain started out "Danny boy". It was not the old Irish air. The singer was male, American-accented if that counts for anything, youngish, it was guitar-based, and somewhat wistful. I'd call it alternative or pop-folk. Does anybody out there have any possibilities for me to search on?

I did a search on Google, but you can imagine what pops up with only "danny boy lyrics" as your terms. I also searched iTunes with "Danny" in the title and focusing on Alternative and Singer-Songwriter, and did come across one good song -- "Danny Boy" by Greenwich -- but although I bought it and like it, I don't think that's the one.

How would you go about finding this song? Or any song if all you have is a bit of lyric and a vague idea of a genre/kind of artist?
16th-Jul-2009 12:18 pm - Korean Names, Genderswitch
I'm working on a fanfiction that takes place in Seoul, present day, and am looking to pull a genderswitch on one of the characters. I would like something feminine that would still make it recognizable as this character.

For all I've studied the culture, etc., the names still baffle me.

The boy's name is DongHae.

I don't even know what to use as a search term to look, so anything in that direction would also be of help.

Thanks.

16th-Jul-2009 10:08 pm - Aha! Screwed
So much for baseball season.

While running out a grounder to short in the 7th inning of my game on Monday night, I managed to rupture the plantar fascia in my left foot. I knew it was something structural, because I could feel it ripping. It was ... unpleasant. On top of that, I was out (it would have been a very close play but for all the hopping that I was reduced to). With the assistance of a teammate I limped back to the dugout and tried to walk it off. That was bad enough that I declined to go back out to third base at the end of the inning. It did not discourage me from batting again, but I was on deck when the game ended. The podiatrist suggested today that perhaps that was just as well, given the existing injury and the weakened structure of the foot. Hey, I did tell the manager that if I reached he'd have had to put in a pinch-runner for me.

OK, OK, just as well.

There were some warning signs - I'd been having some pain in my arch after baseball games (and occasionally after swing dancing) that I had self-diagnosed as plantar fascitis. Interestingly, this presented more commonly for games where I didn't pitch; apparently playing infield was more stressful on the foot than pitching, probably because I come up onto the balls of my feet with every pitch in case the ball is hit near me. Anyway, it's three weeks in an immobilization boot for me, then back to the podiatrist to see what happens after that.

The good news: I can still bicycle! The podiatrist said that as long as I didn't "dig in" and drop the heel while climbing a hill, I should be fine. This means that I'll be able to get SOME exercise in while recovering. He also said that I should minimize any walking in bicycle shoes, which means I'll have to figure out how to carry the boot on the bicycle. A helpful coworker suggested attaching it to my helmet like a crest. I doubt I'll do that :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_GciXA-6Ag

As I said to [info]chuckvideo earlier today:
By July 16th, 1969, I was a veteran of watching so many launches that I knew the last hour of news coverage of the night before (midnight-1 a.m.) and the first two hours of the morning coverage (5-7 a.m.) would tell me nothing I didn't already know (in the last hour before midnight they had broadcast the third repeat of the day of an explanatory clip of how the spacesuit diapers functioned), so I went to bed at midnight and set my alarm clock for seven.

At 6:58 my eyes s*p*r*a*n*g open from the first of only two times in my entire life that my internal clock has awakened me with such precision. I deactivated my external alarm before it could buzz, went into the living room to turn on the big hunk-of-furniture color t.v., then got a bowl & spoon, milk, and Cheerios and sat down in front of it, prepared for for what I knew was going to be a flawless launch.

Some events are just microcosms of perfection. That morning was one of them.
I'm working on moving my ministudio out of the library/office/server room and upstairs into the storeroom/guestroom, thereby making it a studio/guestroom, and I'm trying to figure out what to Do with Stuff. Some of it's no problem - a lot of empty boxes being held pending expiration of warranties, things like that. G'BYE! Some is just a matter of repacking, or putting on the storage shelves in the basement.

One of the difficult cases, however... okay, this is a music journal, and I talk about my music here, but I used to be pretty seriously active as a visual artist and glass sculptor. I haven't done much of this lately - I keep my hand in, a little, doing design work, I even draw a very little once in a while. And I have this massive and completely unsorted collection of human and animal figure reference shots taken from magazines, calendars, and anywhere else that I could grab, all from the pre-web days.

I've never sorted them, or, in fact, actually ever used them. But I have two rather substantial boxes of it that I never got around to sorting. Better yet, the last time I tried, it triggered a massive allergy attack from dust and whatever. Since then, I've had a lot of allergy shots and I have a HEPA filter and I could probably open the boxes now without falling over or anything, but I'm really supposed to avoid exposure to things like that.

This is a pretty decent start to what they used to call an image morgue - sorted and filed, it'd be probably two large filing cabinet drawers. It's probably 15 years of image gathering, and I hate to throw something like that away. The odds of me ever sorting it or using it or anything is... pretty low. But not zero. And there's the allergy thing.

So. Any thoughts?

Hello! I was a member year, oh, probably a good year or two ago but lagged on livejournal. Just wanted to say hello again. I'm Katherine, and I have a havana/dwarf mix rabbit named Maxmillion. I've had him since I was in the 8th grade (I am 22 now).. so we have been together for a pretty long time, haha. Surprisingly he is still extremely healthy for his age. His favorite hobbies are chewing on my things and sitting in front of the fan.

16th-Jul-2009 06:19 pm - playing with fruits and stuff.
so people keep leaving frozen fruit here after brunch. And I'm OK WITH THAT ;-) I've been playing with the Magic Bullet and smoothies of late. I have the party mug set (see here on eBay), which means no pouring or anything - you just drop stuff into the blender, blend, and drink out of the container you made it in. I like the Magic Bullet a lot, but I swear, I LOVE the party mugs.

I've started using yogurt as the base instead of milk, for the taste and for the health benefits of it. The one I just finished had a cup of yogurt, a pile of frozen peaches (courtesy of [info]vibrantabyss, a handful of frozen blueberries (courtesy of [info]spinrabbit), some mint from my front porch, a small scoop of frozen limeade concentrate, and 2 tablespoons of honey. I blended it until it was all liquid, and then added a little water (once the fruit was blended there was more room) and blended it again.

OM NOM NOM only applies to foods, and brains, not liquids. I don't know what to say except that it was REALLY good.

17th-Jul-2009 12:12 am - Porn on TV in the US
Okay, this is probably a very silly question but it just suddenly occurred to me that I can't assume things work alike on the other side of the pond... and I don't exactly know how I'd go about researching this unless I start reading through TV guides.

So, can my character stumble on hardcore porn by accident while channel surfing?

Thanks in advance! (Let me know if I forgot to add some relevant info...)

Edit: Wow, you guys are fast;) I added a little more detail.

Edit2: THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE ANSWERS. I'll have to make a plot point about the existence of the porn channels, then.

16th-Jul-2009 02:17 pm - MemcacheD Update
Just wanted to let everyone know, that a new version of MemcacheD has been released. We will be rolling this out to the memcache nodes during the week of July 20th to 24th. This should have very little impact on the stability of the website; however users may see a slight increase in load times as the cache is re-populated with entries.

The software has been tested and verified to be working just fine with the application; so we perceive this to be a very minimal risk in regards to updating, and the stability of the website.

Thanks...

Because I think fundamentally, Judge, you're able, after all these years of being a judge, to embrace a right that you may not want for yourself, to allow others to do things that are not comfortable to you but for the group, they're necessary. That is my hope for you. That's what makes you to me more acceptable as a judge and not an activist because an activist would be a judge who would be chomping at the bit to use this wonderful opportunity to change America through the Supreme Court by taking their view of life and imposing it on the rest of us. I think and believe, based on what I know about you so far, that you're broad-minded enough to understand that America is bigger than the Bronx, it is bigger than South Carolina.

This wasn't his intended subject, but I think that Sen. Graham perfectly described why heterosexuals should support gay marriage.
16th-Jul-2009 03:13 pm - fostering an un-neutered male
sorry to be posting so much! things have gone from zero to 60 in bunny land. in response to the posts i made yesterday, i also took in my first foster. he's a cute white and brown bun named peyton. he's in a small cage in my room, opposite of bean's cage. bean is a spayed female.

he's un-neutered, which has already posed a pain. i let him out for a little bit, and he checked out my room, rubbing himself on everything. he came up to bean's cage, and they nosed each other and he rubbed his chin all over her cage.... he rubs everything lol! then he decided to do a 360 in the air and spray me, bean's cage and my carpet with urine and cecals D: i knew marking was to be expected but oi! i put him back in his cage and cleaned up the mess quickly with vinegar.

i have another bunny-proofed room i use for playtime that has crappy, textured tile floor, so spills are easier to clean up and the buns don't slip and slide... peyton will get to play in there for the time being. i will be contacting the rescue manager to see about getting peyton fixed as soon as possible.

in the meantime, for those of you who have dealt with un-neutered males and spraying, do you have any advice?

here's the cutie in question, mr peyton

You might be surprised:

West Virginia goes "Take Me Home Big Boy" at #10.

Florida and Louisiana are tied up in 8th & 9th together.

North Dakota is staying warm in 7th place.

Arkansas manages to get it's Little Rocks off at #6.

Oklahoma puts the Hammerstein down and dances into 5th place.

At #4, Hawaii gives a new meaning to "Lei".

Mississippi sings the blues in 3rd place.

Alaska is #2. Guess Sarah's Husband can see boobies from his house.

And a proud #1 to Utah, a beehive of on-line adult activity!

In other news, [info]knightaudit and [info]disheveledhair and Starmaiden and I went out to dinner at Applebee's then to the 8:20 pm showing of Harry Potter & The Half Blood Prince. It's been years since I've read the novel, so can't really comment as to how close the two are (all the main stuff that I remembered seemed to be there) but it was definitely a fun movie, with great acting all around. I was especially impressed with Malfoy this time around - he does angst well! I also enjoyed the Quidditch scenes, which were impressive as always.

I'm looking forward to seeing the movie again on the IMAX in 3D, which I'm sure we'll get around to doing at some point in the next month, although it requires driving up to Louisville to do so.

Can't think of anything else at present. C'est la vie!

I was wondering if anyone here knew of works which presented more extensive terms for various lects?
As far as I can tell the only common terms are: dialect, sociolect, idiolect, basilect, mesolect, and acrolect.

While we're on it, what are some linguistics terms that you really like?
16th-Jul-2009 11:38 am - Lettuce Prey
So I've got a lot of lettuce growing in the garden, and I've been eating it, but it just keeps on growing, because lettuce works that way. Pretty soon it will be time to harvest it for the season. Would anyone like to swap a fresh, sweet head of lettuce for something else? Say, something from your garden or otherwise, or even something not harvest-related. :) I have romaine, red-leaf, and green-leaf.

I am also still quite open to swapping for homemade soymilk, tofu, and/or okara, which I posted about before to much interest but nobody ever actually followed up with anything concrete.

Also, I can offer homemade assorted vegetable krauts, and, relatedly, am always happy to take excess farm share items off anyone's hands. ([info]desert_born, I need to get you yours to see if you like it. :)

And speaking of fermentation, the sparking apfelwein, recently made famous in sorbet at Baitcon, is also available.

I feel really depressed.

Since I don't have work, and the unemployment only BARELY pays for the mortgage and the debt payment, I'm looking at the reality that I might have to sell the house so I don't lose every dollar of life savings I have.

It's pretty crushing to have to admit you've failed in these areas. Not only have I failed, at my age it is pretty unlikely that I'll ever be in this position again: owning my own home. I never effectively planned or budgeted for the future, never even consciously realized that there might come a day when I don't have something to fall back on.

My only solace is that I'm not the only one in this position.
